5 things to do in Budapest
If you are going to visit Budapest and you want to prepare a plan of your trip this post is for you. Budapest is the capital of Hungary. There you can find a lot of monuments such as Parliament and Halászbástya. Although it’s the biggest city in Hungary you can find there nature and a lot of caves. In this article I’ll recommend you different things that you can do in Budapest and I’ll give you some advices related to this activities.
1. Exploring caves
Budapest is called the capital of caves. Under this city there is a very long system of caves. Corridors of these caves were cut by the thermal water. That’s why caves aren’t only a good place to hide from the heat waves but also have healing properties. I visited two caves: Pal-volgyi and Szemlo-hegyi. Both of them are amazing but personally, I like this first one more. Szemlo-hegyi cave have trail with low difficulty level and it’s friendly place for families with small babies. However trails in Pal-volgyi cave are a little bit more difficult because of the fact that visitors of this cave have to climb the seven-meter ladder.
What to take:
- warm clothes – even in the summer there is cold
- headphones – if you don’t speak hungarian you will get an audioguide without headphones. That’s why it’s good idea to have your own.
- phone and/or camera – There are a lot of beautiful stalactites and stalagmites that you can take photos of.
- you don’t need flashlights because both caves are lighted (It doesn’t concern Adventure Caving in Pal-volgyi cave)

Szemlo-hegyi cave: 40min
Pal-volgyi cave: 60min but short tour last 25min

2. Elizabeth Lookout
This historic tower is one of the best viewpoints in the area. It is located on Janos Hill the highest point in the city. That’s why you can see the whole city from there. Views are breathtaking and picturesque.
How to get there:
You can get to there by bus and when you will arrive to the final bus stop you will have two options. You can go to the top of the hill by foot or take the chairlift.
What to take:
- headwear,
- raincoat,
- getting binoculars is worth it,
- money if you want to take chairlift or buy something
3. Halaszbastya
This bastille is one of the most beautiful monuments in the Budapest. Numerous of balconies are free to enter and as you can guess in the summer season there it is a crowd of people. Apart from this it’s very nice viewpoint and place to chill out. This place is surrounded by another monuments such as Viennese Gate and Matthias Church.

4. Market hall
Market hall is one of the best places to buy souvenirs. This building have two floors and additionally there is a supermarket called Aldi under it. On the ground floor you can find market hall with groceries however the first floor is full of souvenirs. Also there are some shops where you can buy Hungarian dishes. Dish that I tried is langos which is a potato pancake with ingridients that you will choose. You can buy both savoury and sweet type of this dish.

5. Margaret Island
This island is full of interesting places. There you can find the ruins of the 13th-century Dominican Monastery, thermal baths, Japanese Garden, and a lot of another historical objects. Margaret Island is surrounded by the waters of the Danube. There are numerous of green parks where you can chill out. I recommend to visit ruins of the Dominican Monastery. This ruins are really big and interesting.

- raincoat
- swimsuit, towel, etc. if you want to visit the thermal bath
